Mini-post: I Saw Orcas!
Welcome to the Footpaths and the Footnotes, a look at exploration, expat life, and fatherhood in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I Saw Orcas!
I'd been on site on the Kāpiti coast for a couple of days, and one afternoon we saw a pod of orcas. These are the first marine mammals I've seen since we moved to Aotearoa New Zealand and it was such an awesome moment.
There were about ten orcas in this pod, they were travelling north along the coast and, according to some commenters on sovial media, hunting stingrays.
“I've never seen them this close to the shore before,” said my colleague.
“I've never seen them,” I countered.
I love the fact that I've moved to a country where marine life is so common that it's just taken for granted that you will have already seen an Orca. That what's remarkable is only their proximity to shore and not the fact that they are in front of you at all.
Don't get me wrong, I hope I'm always able to meet such a sighting with awe. I hope this experience never gets mundane for me.
Thank you for allowing me into your day. Until next time: aroha | love x
